a brief HISTORY women’s football

The History of Women’s Football at Goodwood Saints.

The Goodwood Saints Women’s Football Team was formed in 1999 following a relocation from Brighton based on locality of the majority of players and the organising committee.

The Saints Women were one of 8 SAWFL teams that played during the period 1999-2003. The others were Edwardstown, Woodville West Torrens Eagles, Hectorville, North Adelaide, Kilburn, McLaren Vale, Port Adelaide & West Adelaide. Though there were on 4 or 5 teams in any one season, as trams moved around finding a suitable home.

Even when the comp was struggling with only 4 teams and players were hard to find, the Saints tried their best not to forfeit and would ring in players from anywhere to get a side on the field.

Following the first few years of defeat, the side really started to gel in 2002 they were winning more games than they lost. In 2003 Goodwood Saints Women took out the premiership.

Following a SAWFL recommendation for all clubs to be aligned with an SANFL club, 2004 saw the team relocate to Sturt where they also took put the premiership.
