Goodwood wins Clubs SA Award for Excellence 2018
Best Community Spirit
Goodwood Saints Football Club President Craig Scott says he’s delighted the club was awarded this prestigious award on Saturday 6th October 2018.
“At the Goodwood Saints Football Club we’re more than just a game. Our goals aren’t just footy goals; rather we’ve set a high benchmark for social inclusion via our C7 team for players with integration difficulties and our very important indigenous round. We’ve created two permanent part-time positions for graduate Baristas from the Hutt Street Centre’s Beans Talk Coffee Program and worked in collaboration with Harvest Fair - a social venture whose aim is to provide employment pathways for marginalised women, by getting them to run our clubroom kitchen.
“We have a strong social conscience too, using our club to raise money for worthy causes close to our heart, Patch the Lion Foundation (Heart Kids), The Breast Cancer Network Australia, White Ribbon, beyondblue, the Hutt Street Centre and The Salvation Army’s Red Shield Appeal. This year, our combined fundraising total (for external groups) was $13,458.
“Our club believes in helping our players and coaching staff to be tolerant and understanding of people, we do this by compulsory participation in programs from well-known organisations such as Sammy D Foundation, who ran a drug and alcohol awareness evening for our Under 18s players and senior sides in April this year.
“Headspace, the national mental health foundation, provided an early intervention and wellbeing program to our under 16s boys and girls teams and our under 14s girls and under 15s boys teams undertook Kids Taught Life Support so they know what to do in an emergency situation.
“The Goodwood Saints Football Club has worked very hard to establish its current position within our community and the football fraternity, and continually strives to maintain and improve – to do things better. This award is accepted on behalf of our many volunteers and supporters whose often unrecognised support enables us to do such great things.
“We were honoured to win this important award and would like to congratulate all the other finalists who are also doing great things. It’s wonderful to live, work and play amongst such inspiring and community-minded clubs.”
